I briefly mentioned them in this article on the power of reading, but in today’s article I want to talk a little deeper about the unbelievable resource reading comics is for language learning.
Generally speaking, the power of reading is just huge in several aspects of our lives, and language learning is no exception, but comics are especially useful in the early stages of our language learning journey for multiple reasons.
First of all, their nature makes them an ideal resource when we’re getting started with a language. Simple language and pictures make it way easier to understand the message, and we already know that’s exactly what a language student needs in order to be able to truly acquire a language.
In the early stages of our language learning journey, “normal” books for adults are just not comprehensible (except for a few special cases like Italian or Portuguese for Spanish-speaking people, for instance), and this is exactly where the power of comics comes into play, because they make reading in the target language accessible and we all know about the power of reading in order to learn our favorite language.
Besides that, and even though they’re usually associated with children readers, comics are also an unbelievably interesting resource for us adults when it comes to finding different topics that we may find appealing. Especially if you were as big a comic lover as a kid as I was.
Nowadays, we just have a tremendously large amount of different topics to choose from, so I’m pretty sure you’re going to be able to find that one topic that’s going to help you keep your language journey going while enjoying the process.
Moreover, even if you’re not a big fan of comics and like I said several times when speaking of cartoons, you can always look at this resource as a sort of transition resource that’s going to help you get access to more complex and interesting books such as young adult books and ultimately any other book for adults.
I always say that the ideal resource is the one we find comprehensible and tremendously interesting, but these transition resources do play a role, especially in the early stages, and it’s always going to be better than the boring, tough and inefficient traditional grammar lessons anyway. This idea of finding interesting or even compelling activities is absolutely essential when it comes to the middle or long-term, but there’s nothing wrong with taking advantage of these transition resources at the beginning.
And like I said many times when speaking of cartoons, you’ll even end up enjoying these transition resources a lot despite them not looking so appealing at the beginning.
For all these reasons, I recommend you give this wonderful resource a chance, because it’s going to help you keep your language learning journey going, it’s going to give you access to more complex and interesting books, and because you’re going to enjoy every single minute of it, one of the most important keys to the entire process being successful.
I’ve already mentioned thousands of times and I’ll continue to do so, that we can ALL learn ANY language while enjoying the process, and that’s why comics are such an appropriate and efficient resource to learn your favorite language.
I’ve also talked before about the power of sport events and also about the power of languages exchanges, among others, and I want to add comics to that list because of how great a resource for language learning they are.
Each and every resource that I share in my project are going to have that common feature: the power to help us truly learn a language while enjoying the process. Because I strongly believe that not only is it possible to learn any language while enjoying the process, but it’s actually the ONLY possible way to do it. And I believe this applies to any knowledge, subject, topic… or whatever you want to call it.
Thanks a lot once again for dedicating some of your time to reading this article and I truly hope it helped you discover the tremendous power of this wonderful resource when it comes to learning your favorite language. Don’t forget to leave your comments if there’s anything you want to tell me, ask me, suggest...
